Mastercard Cloudflare Shield marks a strategic move to strengthen cyber defence for small businesses, critical infrastructure and government organisations. The companies announced the collaboration on 20 February 2026, outlining a joint solution designed to help resource-constrained entities detect and respond to cyber threats more effectively.
Under the Mastercard Cloudflare Shield initiative, Mastercard’s Recorded Future and RiskRecon capabilities integrate with Cloudflare’s Application Security portfolio. The combined platform provides continuous attack surface monitoring, real-time visibility into cyber risk and automated defensive tools.
The companies said the solution addresses growing vulnerabilities linked to Shadow IT, exposed domains and outdated software stacks. As digital operations expand, organisations face increasing risks that traditional defences often fail to identify promptly.
Mastercard Cloudflare Shield Targets SMEs
Small and medium-sized enterprises represent a significant share of the global economy. However, they often lack the resources to maintain advanced cybersecurity frameworks. Through Mastercard Cloudflare Shield, SMEs gain access to enterprise-grade monitoring and protection tools.
The integrated solution allows organisations to discover unprotected domains and hidden assets across their digital footprint. It also provides graded security ratings that reflect real-time cyber posture. These ratings help leadership teams prioritise risks based on asset criticality.
In addition, automated protections such as web application firewalls and encryption mechanisms can be deployed directly through Cloudflare’s infrastructure. Findings and risk insights appear in Cloudflare’s Security Insights dashboard, enabling faster decision-making and response.
Integrated Cyber Defence Platform
The collaboration merges Recorded Future’s threat intelligence with RiskRecon’s attack surface monitoring. As a result, organisations can detect misconfigurations, exposed endpoints and vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.
Cloudflare’s Application Security suite adds another layer of protection. It filters malicious traffic, prevents distributed denial-of-service attacks and safeguards web applications. Therefore, customers benefit from both proactive intelligence and active mitigation tools within a unified framework.
Importantly, the initiative focuses not only on detection but also on remediation. Automated controls help close security gaps once they are identified. This reduces reliance on manual intervention, which can delay response times.
Johan Gerber, Global Head of Security Solutions at Mastercard, said small businesses account for roughly half of the world’s GDP. He noted that the collaboration strengthens the broader digital ecosystem and allows businesses to focus on productivity and growth rather than security concerns.
Support for Critical Infrastructure and Governments
Critical infrastructure operators and government agencies face persistent cyber threats. Yet many operate with legacy systems and limited security budgets. Mastercard Cloudflare Shield seeks to address these gaps through scalable and cloud-based protections.
Stephanie Cohen, Chief Strategy Officer at Cloudflare, said small businesses, governments and infrastructure operators remain strategic targets for cyberattacks. She emphasised that these groups often lack adequate defence resources. By combining intelligence and network-level security, the companies aim to provide accessible yet robust protection.
Furthermore, the solution supports continuous monitoring. Real-time insights help organisations maintain awareness of evolving risks. As threat actors refine their tactics, automated updates within the platform can adjust defences accordingly.
Cyber threats continue to rise in frequency and sophistication. Consequently, partnerships between financial technology firms and cybersecurity providers are becoming more common. Mastercard Cloudflare Shield reflects this broader trend toward ecosystem-based defence strategies and enhanced digital resilience.
