Thailand Lifts Alcohol Sales Ban in Afternoon to Boost Tourism

Thailand has temporarily lifted a long-standing ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages in the afternoon as part of efforts to revive the country’s tourism industry. The ban, which had been in place since 1972, restricted the sale of alcoholic drinks between 14:00 and 17:00, primarily to prevent government employees from drinking during work hours.

Under the six-month trial, liquor stores, restaurants, and accredited establishments can now sell beer, wine, and spirits from 14:00 to 17:00. This new development comes just before the peak tourist seasons of Christmas and New Year, when tourism is at its highest.

Lifting the Ban Ahead of Major Holidays

Previously, anyone caught violating the ban faced fines of up to 10,000 baht (about £235 or $313). However, the new trial period allows alcohol sales in Thailand from 11:00 to midnight for the next 180 days, while authorities assess the impact on the economy and tourism.

Boosting the Economy Post-Pandemic

The decision to lift the alcohol sale ban is part of a broader initiative by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to reignite the economy and attract tourists after years of political unrest. Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram remarked that the concerns about government employees drinking during working hours were outdated, given the current climate.

Thailand has one of the highest alcohol consumption rates in Asia, according to the World Health Organisation. Local beer brands like Chang and Singha are immensely popular among both locals and tourists.

This change is expected to enhance Thailand’s appeal to visitors, particularly those seeking a lively nightlife scene. With this move, Thailand aims to increase both domestic and international tourism, stimulating its economy during a critical time.
