The Chinese military conducted combat readiness patrols on Saturday in the territorial waters and airspace of Huangyan Dao, as well as the surrounding maritime and aerial regions. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command confirmed the patrols in a statement, emphasizing that the actions were taken to safeguard China’s sovereignty and security in the region.

Increased Vigilance in South China Sea

Since the start of January, the PLA has stepped up its patrols, deploying both naval and air forces to enhance its vigilance over the territorial waters surrounding Huangyan Dao. The move comes in response to what the command describes as infringements and provocative actions by certain countries in the region.

The Chinese military asserts that its operations are necessary to resolutely counter any threats and to ensure that China’s sovereignty in the South China Sea is not compromised. The PLA Southern Theater Command emphasized that the actions were part of its broader mission to maintain peace and stability in the region.

China’s Position on South China Sea Disputes

The South China Sea has long been a subject of tension due to competing territorial claims by several nations, including China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei. China’s claim to most of the waters in the South China Sea, which includes Huangyan Dao, is contested by other regional powers.

The Chinese military’s patrols in the area are a demonstration of the country’s firm stance on defending its territorial claims and ensuring that its sovereign rights are respected. The PLA has regularly conducted such patrols to assert its position in the region and deter foreign military presence.

Upholding Peace and Stability

While these operations are aimed at maintaining China’s sovereignty, the PLA Southern Theater Command also expressed its commitment to upholding peace and stability in the region. China has frequently called for peaceful resolutions to disputes in the South China Sea, but it has made clear that it will take measures to protect its territorial integrity.
